Tokaj and its surroundings offer unforgettable experiences not only for wine lovers. Bring your friends, hold your partner’s hand, or even set off on your own, and immerse yourself in a long weekend in the heart of Tokaj. Here are a few tips on where to go for unforgettable experiences!

Tokaj as you’ve never seen it before

The name Tokaj is synonymous with its world-famous wine region, but it holds far more than that. The city is mentioned in the Gesta Hungarorum, and its unique cellar culture has preserved its traditions to this day. If you are looking for an authentic wine experience, it is worth visiting the Hercegkút cellar rows, where the cave-like cellars carved into the earth immediately captivate visitors. During wine tastings, you can not only sample the famous Tokaji Aszú but also discover centuries-old winemaking secrets. Want to deepen your knowledge further? Don’t miss the Tokaj Wine Museum in the heart of the town, where tastings are also offered. From there, it’s just a short ride (or a few minutes by bike) to the Bodrogkeresztúr Vinegar Manufactory, where you can learn about traditional vinegar-making techniques.

History comes to life

If you are passionate about history and culture, the Sárospatak Castle is simply unmissable. It was once home to the legendary Rákóczi family, and the site truly brings the past to life. The Mád synagogue enchants visitors with its unique Baroque atmosphere, while Boldogkő Castle offers breathtaking views and an authentic medieval experience, just 40 minutes by car from Tokaj.

Don’t miss Füzér Castle either, one of Hungary’s most beautifully located fortresses, offering a variety of programs throughout the year. In summer, the Füzér Castle Days feature knight tournaments, weapon demonstrations, concerts, and fireworks. During the Pentecost Festival, medieval craft demonstrations and fairs await visitors. In addition, permanent exhibitions present medieval life and the history of the castle.

If nature is what you prefer, head to the Megyer-hegy Tengerszem. This former millstone quarry is now a stunning hiking destination, like a living postcard. Prefer water instead? Don’t miss the programs of the Tokaj Water Tour Center! Whether it’s dragon boating, SUP, or even yoga on the water, you will surely find something for you. They also offer e-bike tours through the atmospheric vineyards.

Extreme adventures and relaxing experiences

Looking for active challenges? You definitely won’t get bored in the Tokaj region. Just an hour from Tokaj, the Zemplén Adventure Park awaits with a bobsled track, two chairlifts, various adventure courses, and even the world’s longest-span pedestrian suspension bridge.
