Attraction Bodrogzug: Where you can paddle among the trees

Bodrogzug is one of Hungary’s most mysterious and untouched landscapes. The floodplain area between Tokaj and Bodrogkeresztúr is not only a protected nature reserve, but also a living, dynamic aquatic world that changes its appearance every year.

“The Hungarian Amazon”

The uniqueness of Bodrogzug lies in its annual floods. When the Bodrog and Tisza rivers rise, the Bodrogzug transforms into a vast, continuous lake. At such times, visitors can experience something truly unique in Hungary: canoeing through flooded forest. Paddlers do not follow a defined riverbed, but instead move among tree trunks, submerged meadows, and labyrinth-like reed beds.

Magical wildlife

This region is an island of tranquility where nature reigns supreme. The water surface is decorated with yellow water lilies and white water roses, while rare bird species such as the black stork and the white-tailed eagle nest in the riverside willow groves. The area is a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance, making it a true paradise for quiet nature observers and birdwatchers.

How to visit

Although Bodrogzug is a wild and unspoiled landscape, it is important to note that it is a strictly protected area.

  • Access: Visiting (especially canoeing) requires permission from the Hortobágyi National Park Directorate.
  • Starting points: Most water tours depart from Tokaj or Bodrogkeresztúr.
  • Best time to visit: Spring, during the floods, offers the most spectacular experience, but summer—with blooming water lilies—is also unforgettable.

Bodrogzug is the perfect destination for those who want to escape urban noise and experience a place where nature still sets the rhythm of life.
